There is another group of women in Salonika who are very different in both appearance and social status. These women belong to a group called the **Deunmeh**. They are unique to Salonika and have an interesting history.
The Origin of the Deunmeh
Two hundred and fifty years ago, a man appeared among the Jewish community and claimed to be the true Messiah. The Turkish authorities asked him to perform a miracle to prove his claim, but when he failed, he admitted that he was not the Messiah. After this, he converted to Islam, and many of his followers did the same. However, the Turks did not respect those who changed their religion. As a result, the Deunmeh, though Muslim by religion, were not allowed to marry into Muslim families. A Separate Community
Because the Deunmeh were rejected by both Muslims and Jews, they formed their own isolated community. They have been marrying among themselves for over 250 years. Today, there are only about 10,000 Deunmeh people, and they are mostly based in Salonika. Despite being excluded from both groups, the Deunmeh have become known for their intelligence and business skills. They are among the richest people in Salonika and are known for their refined culture and aristocratic manners.
The Deunmeh Women’s Appearance and Style
The women of the Deunmeh community have delicate, pale faces with large, dark, dreamy eyes. They are tall, attractive, and seem somewhat distant or relaxed in their manner. Their dress is unique and reflects their religious restrictions as well as their love for beauty and decoration. Although they follow Muslim customs and wear black clothing with a thin shawl as a head covering, their clothing is beautifully designed and well-adorned Albanian Men and Their Authority.

Despite the modesty required by their religion, the Deunmeh women manage to add their personal touch of elegance. They often leave their forearms bare and carry black fans, which they use to shield their faces from men’s eyes.
